Sickness and Work
Illness for 7 days or less
If you are ill for seven days or less then you do not require a doctor's sickness certificate.
It is the responsibility of employees to self-certificate for any absence from work through illness of less than seven days duration. For more information please visit the HMRC website.
Unfortunately, pressures on general practice mean that we have to review our work to ensure that we are able to focus on our key duty of care for patients, and so we are unable to provide sick notes for absences of less than a week.
If you are sick for more than seven days, your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).
